Intern/Volunteer Protection of Civilians
PAX is looking for a new person to temporarily join the Protection of Civilians (PoC) team. The PoC team consists of about a dozen motivated staff, spread out over multiple countries. Together with these colleagues, you will work on and support research on civilian protection issues.

What will you do?
As the intern/volunteer for the PoC team, you will chiefly be responsible for lending support to ongoing research projects. Your tasks will range from coding qualitative research data, conducting literature reviews, to overall support on editing, formatting and disseminating of research output. You will work closely with the PoC team’s Project Lead Research.
Your daily activities will revolve primarily around supporting an ongoing research project on civilian access to/experiences with state-led compensation mechanisms for conflict-related civilian harm in Iraq. This involves the analysis and coding of interview transcripts (English-language), and additional literature reviews where needed. Where useful and feasible, daily tasks may also involve broader support to the Project Lead Research and overall PoC team (e.g., support with social media or the team newsletter, support on other research projects).

Who are we looking for?
- You are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree in the field of Conflict Studies, International Relations, Cultural Anthropology or a related field (intern) or have graduated recently in 2025-2026 (volunteer);
- Demonstrable knowledge of and/or experience with qualitative research, specifically (interview) coding and literature reviews;
- Knowledge of and/or experience with social media development is an advantage;
- Fluency in English is required, fluency in Arabic is an advantage (when dealing with Arabic-language source material);
- Demonstrable knowledge of and/or interest in PoC, civilian harm mitigation, and/or transitional justice and accountability topics is an advantage;
- Strong motivation and work ethic;
- Ability to meet deadlines;
- Affinity with PAX’s mission and values;
- Eligible to work in the EU;
- Located in The Netherlands and ability to travel to the Utrecht office on a regular basis.

- Working hours and duration in consultation, preferably 2 - 3 days per week for a period of 3 months;
- Internship or volunteer allowance up to a maximum of EUR 360,- gross per month (intern) or net EUR 210,- per month (volunteer), including travel costs, on fulltime basis (5 days per week).
